PADI Divemaster
Take the first step in your PADI professional dive career?
The PADI Divemaster course is your first step towards becoming a dive professional. Our Divemaster trainee program is run on an internship basis where you become part of our dive team and work with our team of experienced Instructors, whilst developing your own dive leadership abilities.
During the course you will build on your dive knowledge and skills to a professional standard. As a PADI Divemaster you are qualified to supervise certain dive activities and assist instructors with student divers on PADI courses. You will get plenty of practice assisting Instructors in all of these roles so upon certification you are a confident Divemaster.
Our philosophy is that the best way to learn the role of a Divemaster is to experience how a dive center operates on a day to day basis, rather than reading books and doing simulated exercises, you will be involved in our dive activities and assisting Instructors when they are teaching real students.
The Gili Islands are known as being one of the best dive destinations in the world to start a career as a PADI professional. Beautiful tropical islands surrounded by numerous exciting dive sites with a vibrant dive community and great social life.
What you learn on the PADI Divemaster Course
In addition to assisting Instructors, Divemaster trainees also learn and develop your own dive leadership skills through a combination of classroom presentations and independent study. During your Divemaster course you will participate in skill demonstration workshops, refresh the skills from your Rescue Diver course. You will also learn how to supervise and manage dive activities for certified diver and join in training exercises that stretch your ability to organize and solve problems as well as helping other divers to improve their skills.
What you can teach as a certified PADI Divemaster
As a certified PADI Divemaster you can:
- Supervise both training and non-training-related activities by planning, organizing and directing dives
- Assist a PADI Instructor during training sessions for any PADI Diver course
- Conduct the PADI Skin Diver course and PADI Discover Snorkeling program
- Conduct the PADI Discover Local Diving experience
- Conduct the PADI Scuba Review program
- Qualified Discover Scuba Diving Leaders can independently conduct the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program.
- Apply for the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor rating allowing you to teach the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer specialty.
- Independently guide Open Water Diver course students on the tour portion of Open Water Diver course Training Dives 2, 3 and 4 at a ratio of two student divers per certified divemaster.
- Accompany Open Water Diver students under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor during:
- surface swims to and from the entry/exit point and during navigational exercises
- when the instructor conducts a skill, such as an ascent or descent, a Divemaster can remain with other student divers (with an individual student or buddy team)
- Accompany student divers during Adventure Dives or Specialty training dives under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor.
- Conduct the PADI Seal Team Skin Diver Specialist AquaMission
- Conduct subsequent dives under an instructor’s indirect supervision for Discover Scuba Diving participants after participants have satisfactorily completed the first dive with a PADI Instructor.
- Teach Emergency First Response courses after successfully completing an Emergency First Response Instructor course.

If you’re have limited time available to complete your Divemaster training then we recommend that you consider completing the theory portion of the course online through PADI Divemaster eLearning.
Divemaster elearning is available online and you can sign up today. Please also contact us to confirm when you will arrive to the Gili Islands to complete your practical training.
What are the prerequisites for the PADI Divemaster Course
To take this course, you must be:
- 18 years old
- A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent from another training organization)
- A PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent from another training organization)
- An Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (or qualifying first aid and CPR training from another organization) course completion within the past 24 months.
- Have at least 40 dives to begin the course and 60 for certification
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
How long does the PADI Divemaster Course Take
We recommend a period of 3 to 4 weeks to complete the Divemaster training, with most courses completed within the 5 week period agree by all dive centers on the Gili Islands. During your training you will have unlimited free fun diving and we run up to 4 dives a day, meaning that many candidates finish their course with well over the 60 required dives.
